VARIOUS RISK FACTORS WHEN DRIVING
|
|
FOGGY CONDITIONS
|
If you are driving
in dense fog, what should you do?
You should travel slowly, and use
your dipped headlights.
(the reason you have to use dipped headlights, is becuase if
you turn on full headlights, the light would be reflected off
the fog back into your car, and you would be unable to
see the road.) |
Under which of the following circumstances
should you use rear fog lamps: during foggy conditions, at night
or when the vehicle behind is too close?
The answer is during foggy conditions. |
When may you use a
high intensity fog light to the rear?
You may use it in heavy rain, snow or
fog. |
|
NIGHT-RIDING
|
What effect could incorrectly
aimed headlights have?
They could dazzle oncoming road-users,
and seriously reduce their ability to see the road. |
Should you dim your lights, if there
is a cyclist or pedestrian on the other side of the road, at
night?
You must always dim your lights for oncoming
pedestrians and cyclists, as it is almost impossible for them
to see the road if you blind them with your full-lights. |
Driving at night-time,
you should dip your headlights when:
You meet other road-users, driving behind
another vehicle, and driving in lit-up areas. |
What should you do if you are blinded
by the lights of an oncoming vehicle?
You should reduce your speed, and slow
down if it's necessary. (you shouldn't look directly at the
headlights of the oncoming vehicle, but instead look at your
side of the road.) |
|
If you have been used to travelling
during the daylight, and now need to drive at night. You ought
to:
Drive at a lower speed at night-time,
than you do during daylight, as there is reduced visibility. |
|
If you are driving at night, you
should:
Maintain a speed that will allow you
to stop within the distance ahead, that you can see to be
clear. |
If driving at night, which of the
following is advisable: keep your full headlights on at all
times, keep your lights dipped at all times or maintain a
speed which will allow you to stop within a distance on the
road that you can see to be clear.
Maintain a speed which will allow you
to stop within a distance on the road that you can see to
be clear.
|
|
If another vehicle is approaching
as you drive along at night:
You shouldn't look directly at its headlights,
but instead concentrate on your own side of the road. |
|
Can you drive with full headlights
in a built-up area at night-time?
No you can't. |
|
If there is another vehicle close
head of you on the road, what lights should you use?
You should use dipped headlights. |
|
When must you use dipped headlights?
When another vehicle is approaching
you, or you are driving closely behind another vehicle. |
|
What danger should you always be
conscious of, when driving late at night?
Always be aware of the danger of falling
asleep, and don't drive if you are not feeling alert. |
|
If the lights of an oncoming car
temporarily dazzle you, as you are driving along, take the
following measures:
Carefully slow down your vehicle, and
concentrate on your side of the road, ensuring that you don't
look directly at the lights of oncoming vehicles. |
|
If you become dazzled by the reflections
of headlights in your rear view mirror:
Reduce your speed carefully, and adjust
the rear-mirror to the night driving mode (ie change the angle
of the mirror, using the switch on the mirror). |
What effect could driving
with one headlight have on other drivers?
They might think that the vehicle is a
motorbike, and not give enough road clearance, leading to a
collision. |
What are the standard
lights that cars, tractors and work vehicles must have, when
travelling at night?
Headlights, Brake lights, Indicators,
Rear number plate light, red rear reflectors and side lights
on both the front and rear of the vehicle. |
A motor-cycle needs
the following lighting, when travelling at night:
Headlight, Rear red light, red rear reflector
and a number plate light. |
If you are travelling
at night, and an oncoming vehicle has only one headlight, what
should you do?
Stay well on the left of the road, as
the oncoming vehicle could be a car or other 4-wheeled vehicle
with a broken headlight. |
If your motorcycle
is parked at night on an unlit road, what lights should be
on?
You should have a white light on in
the front and a red light on in the rear. |
If your vehicle, whether it be
a tractor, car or work vehicle, is parked on an unlit public
roadway at night-time, what lights should it have on?
A front and rear side-lamp, on the side
nearest the road, at the very least. |
|
SLIPPERY ROADS
|
If you are driving along an icy surface,
what driving methods should you practice:
You should drive at a lower speed than
normal, and change speed very gently (both gentle braking and
acceleration), to prevent skidding. |
What dangers can icy roads cause,
when driving?
Because road-holding is severely reduced,
there is a much greater chance of skidding, and losing control
of the car. |
If you are travelling on a slippery
road, what should you do to minimise the risk of skidding?
You should brake and accelerate very gently
(in all gears), and keep your speed low. |
When travelling around a bend in slippery
conditions, you should:
Drive very slowly and keep a smooth even
pace. |
When driving in snow, what dangers
arise?
There is a risk of skidding, but it will
also become difficult to clearly see the road signs and markings. |
If you are travelling in heavy rain,
what danger might arise?
There is a danger of aquaplanning. This
is where a thin film of water develops between the road surface
and the tyre, leading to a complete loss of grip with the road,
and hence dangerous skids. |
What danger arises if you are travelling
at high speeds on wet roads, and your tyres are worn?
You could start aquaplanning. You could
lose control of the vehicle, as a film of water has formed between
the tyres and the road. |
What should you do if you meet a muddy
section on the roadway?
Gently lower your speed, and keep your
eyes open for tractors and other working vehicles. |
If you have driven through a flooded
road section, what safety measures should you take afterwards?
Pump your brakes gently, while travelling
at low speed, to dry your brakes out. |
Does wet weather have an effect on
a cars engine performance?
No. |
If you are approaching a flooded section
of the road, you should:
Lower your speed, and drive in a lower
gear. |
|
WINDY CONDITIONS
|
What effect could strong winds have
on a motorcyclist?
Strong winds could cause the motorcyclist
to be blown off course. |
|
ROAD-WORKS
|
If you are travelling along and see
roadworks ahead of you on the road, you should?
Lower your speed, and get ready to stop
for any obstacles or work vehicles ahead. |
If you see roadworks, ahead you should
be aware that the road ahead could have:
Mud and chippings on the surface. |
|
HUMP-BACKED BRIDGES
|
What is the danger in
driving a tractor and trailer over a hump-backed bridge?
If a bad bump is encountered, the trailer
could become detached from the tractor.
