JUDGEMENT AND PERCEPTION
|
|
FATIGUE
|
If you become tired and
drowsy whilst driving, you should:
Stop the car, and take a break. It's a
good idea also to take a short walk. |
To maintain alertness during a long
journey, you should:
Turn up the air circulation, and stop
regularly if necessary. |
If you are driving
along and begin to feel tired, you should:
Open one of the windows to increase ventilation,
and stop if necessary for a break |
How can a warm vehicle interior affect
you, especially at night?
It could make you feel increasingly listless
and drowsy. |
If exhaust gases leak
into the vehicle interior, what could happen?
You could begin to feel drowsy or ill. |
|
AWARENESS
|
When you are behind
schedule, and arriving later than expected, you should:
Not rush, remain calm and patient, and
drive in a safe manner. |
If you are driving in traffic, and
don't want to drive at the same speed as the vehicles ahead
of you, you should:
Keep to the left-hand side, and allow
vehicles behind to overtake you if they want. |
If you see a school
bus stopped on the same side of the road ahead of your vehicle,
what action should you take:
Slow down, and only overtake with great
caution. |
If you are approaching a vehicle from
behind, that is swerving from side-to-side on the road in an
unsafe way, what should you do:
Remain behind at a safe distance, and
wait until there is a widening in the road where you can overtake
safely. |
If a heavy goods vehicle
has moved out a bit, so as to take a left-turn ahead, you should:
Remain behind it, and allow it to finish
its turn. |
If there is a bus ahead signalling
that it is going to take a left-turn, and has already moved
out in order to take the turn, and there is also oncoming traffic,
you should:
Remain behind at a safe distance, and
let the bus complete the turn. |
If you see a truck ahead,
reversing into a side-entrance on the left-hand side, you
should:
Stop and wait a while until the way
is clear. |
|
The green light is on at the traffic lights,
and you want to turn right, however there is oncoming traffic.
What should you do?
Move forward towards the centre of the
box junction, and remain there until an appropriate gap opens
up in the oncoming traffic. You may then execute your turn. |
|
Should you over-take, if you are
likely to force oncoming traffic into the hard shoulder on
the other-side of the road?
No. |
|
When oncoming traffic is forced onto
the hard shoulder of the road, because of your driving, this
is considered to be:
Dangerous driving. |
|
May you move into the hard-shoulder,
if you would like to leave the cars behind you overtake you,
when there is oncoming traffic?
Yes. |
Is it permissable to drive on the
hard-shoulder, if you would like to allow faster moving traffic
to overtake?
Yes. |
When you are in a queue of traffic,
at traffic lights, you should:
Stay in your position in the queue. |
If you are driving in a car with a
very smooth ride, excellent suspension, and a powerful engine,
what effect could this have on your driving?
It could make you think that you are moving
more slowly than you actually are. |
|
REACTION TIME
|
Given that one must drive within the
speed limits, what is considered the safest speed at which to
drive?
A safe speed, is a speed which allows
you to stop within a distance ahead that is clear and free from
other vehicles or other obstacles. |
|
ATTENTION
|
If you want to use a mobile phone
while driving, what should you do?
You should stop the car in a safe place,
before using the mobile. |
If you are at a set of traffic lights, and the lights change
to green, what should you do?
Ensure that the junction is free from other vehicles, and
then move on carefully. |
|
PATIENCE
|
If another vehicle denies you the
right of way at a junction, what action should you take?
Remain calm, and be patient. |
If you are upset or annoyed by something,
and need to drive somewhere, what should you do?
You shouldn't drive anywhere until you
are calm and composed again. |
If another vehicle
is overtaking you, as you are driving along, and there is oncoming
traffic, what steps should you take?
You should slow down carefully (using
your rear mirror), so that the driver can move in ahead of your
vehicle. |
If you are in a rush, and another
vehicle gets in your way, what should you do?
Remain patient, and calm, and don't take
any retaliatory action. |
If you get a flat tyre
whilst in transit, what action should you take?
You should look for a safe place to stop,
and then change the vehicle's tyre. |
If you would like to move into another traffic lane to
your right, in which there is moving traffic, what should
you do?
You should look carefully in your wing-mirrors (side-mirrors)
and rear-view mirror, indicate that you are moving right,
and look for a safe gap in the traffic, before pulling out
and moving into the right-hand traffic lane. |
If you're driving a motorbike, and you want to change lanes, what should you do first?
Firstly check your mirrors, and look around where necessary, before indicating and moving over. |
|
ALCOHOL
|
Alcohol could have
what effect on your driving?
It could create a false feeling of alertness,
and security, whilst having a negative effect on your reaction
time and concentration. Never drink and drive - it kills! (Even
when your blood alcohol level is lower than the legal limit,
there is a negative effect on your driving ability, which could
cost someone their life.) |
What effect does drinking alcohol
have on a driver's ability?
It dramatically lowers your reaction time,
and your ability to concentrate on the road. It also has a detrimental
effect on your judgement, which will cause you to take unnecessary
risks. |
|
MEDICINES
|
What effect could taking medications have
on your driving ability?
You should ask your doctor about the effects of your medication
on driving, and find out if you can drive whilst taking that
particular medication. |
